The story of the Batwa people
The Batwa people were displaced from their traditional forest environment in 1992 when the mountain gorilla protection programme was implemented. Some of them now live in remote villages high above Lake Bunyonyi in south western Uganda where they can no longer survive as hunter gatherers.
Forced out of the forest…
Removed from their forest dwellings by government authorities in order to establish the Mgahinga and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks in Uganda, the Batwa (formerly known as pygmies) now mostly live in destitution around the town of Kisoro through which tourists stream to visit the parks created to protect the endangered mountain gorillas.
